The Peter and Paul Fortress was founded on one of small islands in delta of Neva River in May,27 of 1703 (now May,27 is celebrated as the birthday of Saint Petersburg). Made by order of Peter the Great as the Fort to protect city against possible attacks of enemy's Navy. But it mostly served as a prison for political prisoners.
Internal territory contains several buildings. One of the most important is Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral - burial place of all Russian Tsars from Peter the Great (founder of Saint-Petersburg) to Alexander III (father Nicolas II - last Russian Tsar, killed after Russian Revolution of 1917). With the total height of 123.2 m. Peter and Paul Cathedral is the highest building in Saint-Petersburg.
